Instant messaging is everywhere these days. Skype, MSN, Yahoo, Google just to name a few and then there are apps that tie them all together.
Should you allow it? Up to you really. You will get a few whinges if you don't, you will get a few time wasters if you do and it will cost you money to try to stop it and more money as people spend time trying to find a way around it. It can come in useful for remote workers, especially the Microsoft Instant Messengers as you can often take remote control of a PC and fix a problem and they can be handy for keeping in occassional touch with people that you need to keep in touch with, like your family.
Security Risk
Everything is a security risk. Instant Messaging
applications are generally less of a risk than email or internet
surfing. True, the more risks you have, the more chance of something
going wrong, but in the grand scheme of things, we wouldn't worry about
it.
